Wee Build Construction Zone!

Somerset County Library has received several kits from the Office of Commonwealth Libraries that provide building materials for young children and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant. The Library will offer open play opportunities, special events, outreach activities, and special Story Time activities incorporating these building materials in order to help prepare preschoolers to achieve the Pennsylvania Learning Standards for early childhood.

Between now and the end of June 2016, at least one Wee Build kit will be available for use in the Wee Build Construction Zone in the Children’s area of the Somerset County Library during all open hours. Additional kits not suitable for children under the age of three are available for check-out for in-library use—just ask at the Desk.

Playing is no idle pastime. In fact, research shows that playing helps children develop socially, emotionally, and physically. And playing with building materials teaches important lessons in mathematics, science, language arts, and art. Blocks and other building materials allow children to experiment with shape, classification, order, size, space, gravity, weight, balance, trial and error, and patterns. As they work with other children or respond to questions from adults, children also develop their language skills by sharing ideas and telling stories about what they are building.

So, come in to the library to relax, play, and watch your child at work building a brighter future!
