Hour Of Code

Somerset County Library - Main
Somerset, PA – Somerset County Library announced today that it will host an Hour of Code for children ages 5 through 12 at the library on December 5 during the regular meetings of the STEAM Rollers and STEAM Team clubs. Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet, but fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Girls and minorities are severely underrepresented in computer science classes, and in the tech industry. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this. The Hour of Code, organized by the nonprofit Code.org and over 100 others, is a global movement that believes the students of today are ready to learn critical skills for 21st century success. With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Over 100 partners have joined together to support this movement.
Somerset County Library is part of an exciting statewide initiative, PA Forward | Pennsylvania Libraries, where libraries are partnering with other organizations to help people build essential literacies, including information literacy. Computer science skills are a component of information literacy in today’s world. That’s why your library is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11). During this hour, attendees of both STEAM clubs will learn and apply coding logic during hands on activities using their choice of Bee Bots, Ozobots, or the Scratch computer programming language.
This free event is intended for children ages 5 through 12 and their families. Please RSVP to Trisha Weigle at firstname.lastname@example.org. For directions or more information, please call the Somerset County Library administrative office at (814) 445-2556, option 4.
